Incentives for Councils to Fluoridate Local Water

Posted in Dental Health Focus by Dion Kramer on October 28, 2005

I recently read a ministerial press release from the Queensland Government dated 16 October 2005.

The government has announced that it will offer rebates to councils that decide to fluoridate local water supplies. The five-year rebate will cover 100% of the capital cost of introducing fluoridation in communities with populations over 5,000 people. The government notes that 43 communities with populations of over 5,000 people exist that could potentially be fluoridated at a capital cost of about $A6 million.

Research has found that water fluoridation reduces the incidence of tooth decay – a major health and social problem. According to Queensland Health, water fluoridation will reduce the amount of tooth decay by 20% to 40% over a lifetime. You can learn more by clicking on water fluoridation.

Health System Crisis – Waiting List Skyrockets

Posted in Dental Health Focus by Dion Kramer on October 25, 2005

An article titled ‘650,000 Join Dental Queue for Treatment’ has appeared in The Australian today.

The article outlines the following points:

  • There are more than 650,000 people on waiting lists for treatment and at least 20,000 joining the queue each year. Many are waiting up to four years to receive treatment for painful and potentially dangerous conditions.
  • Waiting lists in some states have doubled since the federal government axed a dental funding program in 1997. The government abolished the program in 1997 leaving the states to fund public dental services. Since then the number of people on waiting lists has skyrocketed by more than 42per cent, from 450,000 to 652,000.
  • Australian Dental Association chief executive Robert Boyd-Boland has been reported as saying, “People’s health is deteriorating while the commonwealth and state governments argue about who has responsibility for dental health”.
  • Waiting lists grew most markedly in Queensland and Western Australia where the shortage of dentists is particularly severe.

Gum Disease Linked to Early Births

Posted in Dental Health Focus by Dion Kramer on October 19, 2005

I just read an article published in the New York Times titled ‘Gum Disease Is Linked to Rates of Early Birth’.

The article suggests that pregnant women with gum disease are more likely to give birth to premature babies as compared with pregnant women with healthy gums. A study to be published in The Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery has found that gum disease can be a more reliable predictor of premature birth than smoking.

Teeth Whitening: A Simple Way to Improve Your Appearance

Posted in Dental Health Focus by Dion Kramer on October 10, 2005

A couple of months ago we introduced ‘Your Oral Health’. It contains papers on various oral health topics.

Below is an overview of a paper that looks at the popular topic of ‘Teeth Whitening’.

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance. Whiter teeth can boost your self-esteem and confidence. Years of drinking coffee, tea, cola, red wine, and smoking eventually takes their toll on teeth. The results are dull, yellowish-colored teeth. Some teeth may have darker grey-coloured stains due to antibiotics. Most teeth will benefit from tooth whitening. Teeth whitening is a proven safe and effective way to brighten stained, discolored teeth.

Your dentist has a variety of methods for restoring a bright white smile including porcelain veneers, composite bonding, implants and whitening, also known as bleaching. However, of all the advances made in dentistry to enhance the appearance of the teeth, whitening is the easiest and least invasive, and effective for 3 out of 4 cases. The procedure is safe, simple, and more affordable than ever before. Because of these reasons and more, whitening has become very popular.

Oral Care for Expectant Mothers

Posted in Dental Health Focus by Dion Kramer on October 3, 2005

It is important that an expectant mother visit a dentist during pregnancy. You should also inform your dentist of your pregnancy as this may affect the type of care required to maintain good oral health.

The Australian Dental Association highlights several items of concern for an expectant mother.

  • Pregnant women experience hormonal changes which can sometimes lead to gum inflammation. This results in swelling and bleeding of the gums. It is important to make your dentist aware of any gum inflammation.
  • Research has shown a strong association between gum disease in pregnant women and subsequent premature births and low birth-weight. It is essential that gum disease be controlled during pregnancy in order to minimise this effect.
  • During pregnancy cravings can lead to snacking. The ADA says that it is important to avoid high sugar snacks. Help look after teeth by eating a wide variety of foods low in sugar and high in calcium and drinking milk and fluoridated tap water where possible. Keep in mind that while in the womb, the baby’s teeth requires calcium for healthy development.
  • Morning sickness can have a damaging effect on teeth as they are exposed to acids due to vomiting and gastric reflux. Do not brush your teeth immediately after vomiting. Smear a small amount of fluoridated toothpaste over the teeth and rinse with water or use a fluoride mouth rinse.
