Given a Choice, Kids Make Smart Choices
This is an article that was recently published in MarketWatch – USA.
Healthy Treats Trump Candy at Green Halloween Festival
“We were delighted and surprised when children, given the choice of healthy vs. candy treats, overwhelmingly chose healthy Halloween treats such as small pre-packaged carrots or trail mix, string cheese, yogurt sticks and cheese/cracker snacks rather than candy,” said volunteer dentist Kimberly Santiago.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, more than 500 costumed elementary school children and their parents attended the family-friendly Green Halloween Festival in Issaquah organized by Issaquah Highlands Council. Kids enjoyed pony-and-wagon rides, carnival games, face painting, ghost stories, mad science, a hay maze and the choice of healthy vs. candy treats.
Kids who visited the Washington State Dental Association’s Oral Health Foundation booth during the Festival got to choose from healthy or candy treats, while volunteer dentists observed how kids respond when given the choice to eat healthy snacks as a Halloween treat.
While many parents try to instill healthy habits in their kids throughout the year, the dental group demonstrated that kids will choose healthy when given the choice.
“Nearly every child, without coaching from a parent, first reached for a dairy treat, a bag of carrots, or one of the prizes that were offered. The string cheese sticks, yogurt and trail mix bars, donated by the Dairy Farmers of Washington were the first to go, followed by seashells and shiny rocks, carrots, and apples,” Sandy Hardymon, Executive Director of the Washington Oral Health Foundation for the Washington State Dental Association said.
According to volunteer Dr. Jed Santiago, “We are encouraging people to offer healthy treats or earth-friendly surprises this Halloween, and reminding them that whatever the treat, everyone should brush and floss before going to bed.”
Chicago Study: Raisins Contain Compounds that May Inhibit Cavity-causing Bacteria
This is an article that recently appeared in MarketWatch – USA.
New research published in the journal, Phytochemistry Letters, reveals raisins may benefit oral health because the fruit possesses antimicrobial phytochemicals that suppress growth of some oral bacteria associated with dental cavities and gum disease. The study was conducted at the College of Dentistry, University of Illinois – Chicago (UIC), by a research group led by Christine D. Wu, M.S., Ph.D., Professor and Director of Cariology Research, Department of Pediatric Dentistry at UIC. The research is part of ongoing UIC studies that examine a variety of natural sources of compounds that possess antimicrobial activities against oral pathogens.
“The findings of this particular study build upon previous laboratory research identifying compounds in raisins as effective at inhibiting cavity-causing organisms in the mouth,” said Wu. “Our investigation indicates there are several naturally occurring, beneficial phytochemicals in raisins that work to inhibit bacteria associated with dental caries and gum disease.”
The in vitro study, which was supported by the California Raisin Marketing Board (CRMB), isolated eight known compounds from raisins and then tested each for antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens, Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas ginigvalis, the bacteria can cause cavities and gum disease, respectively. The research revealed half of the compounds exhibited antimicrobial properties.
Oleanolic acid was one such compound showing positive response to reducing pathogenic activity. Prior, non-related studies reveal oleanolic acid also has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties; thereby, suggesting the benefits of this natural compound found in raisins may go beyond oral health.
“Oral health and nutrition have always been linked—indicating that a healthy mouth supports a healthy body; in fact, some studies have shown an association between poor oral health and systemic diseases such as coronary heart disease,” said Julie Miller Jones, Ph.D., L.N., C.N.S., Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Family, Consumer and Nutritional Sciences at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota and national scientific advisor to the CRMB. “Since oleanolic acid has proven beneficial, not only in this study but others, as well, we are intrigued about future research possibilities associated with the benefits of oleanolic acid intake via raisin consumption.”
Break The Dental Impasse – Australian Healthcare And Hospitals Association
This is an article that was recently published in Medical News Today.
Expensive ‘high end’ treatments should be excluded from the current Medicare-based program and the saved funds put into dental services for the disadvantaged, in a proposal put forward by the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) to resolve the dental impasse in the Senate.
“The AHHA is deeply concerned about delays in resolving the implementation of the three-year $290 million Commonwealth Dental Health Program for pensioners and other low income earners because the Senate has blocked the cessation of the previous Government’s Medicare Chronic disease dental program,” Ms Prue Power, Executive Director said today.
“If the impasse is not resolved immediately, expenditure under the poorly-targeted and unrestricted Medicare chronic disease dental program is likely to blow-out to more than three times the level budgeted for the program by the previous Government.
“Nearly half of the expenditure under this program is on ‘high end’ treatments such as crowns, veneers and bridges, frequently for wealthier people with often dubious chronic diseases. It is impossible to justify priorities that see this kind of dental care funded by Government while pensioners and other low income earners cannot even get the basics,” Ms Power said
High End Expenditure in the Medicare Chronic Disease Dental Program (percentage)
State/Territory (% of expenditure on ‘high end’ treatment – crowns, veneers, etc)
NSW - 42%
VIC - 35%
QLD - 25%
SA - 30%
WA - 58%
TAS - 45%
ACT - 29%
NT - 0%
Total – 42%
“Meanwhile, because the Federal Minister approved State implementation plans in July this year, many State and Territory public dental services have committed expenditure to much-needed treatment programs under the CDHP. The eleventh hour decision to put the Commonwealth Dental Health Program on hold has placed major strains on many of these services and the dental staff who work in them.
“As a result, public dental and oral health services are having to restructure their programs, staffing and other resources. For example many clinics will have to cancel non-emergency dental care for people on waiting lists. This will lead to yet another increase in public dental waiting times when expectations had been raised that waiting times would be reduced.
“The AHHA proposes that ‘high end’ dentistry, such as crowns, bridges and veneers, be excluded from the Medicare chronic disease dental program. The Association also recommends that the eligible chronic diseases should be specified to prevent rorting – already the boundaries are being pushed on what constitutes a ‘chronic disease’ in order for people to access the program. Our recommended changes would still allow people with oral health problems that are impacting on their chronic medical conditions to get the type of dental treatment that will really make a difference to their quality of life.
“The changes would also save vastly more than the $100 million needed annually to allow the immediate introduction of the CDHP so pensioners and other low income earners can get the basic treatment they need to maintain their oral health into the future,” Ms Power said.
Big brush-off for kids’ bad dental habits
This is an article by Kamahl Cogdon that was recently published in The Herald Sun – Victoria, Australia.
YOUNG children and their parents need to brush up on dental hygiene, research shows.
Only 3 per cent of preschoolers brushed their teeth correctly and only 22 per cent consistently brushed twice a day, the survey showed.
More than half had never been to a dentist.
The Galaxy Research poll found the bathroom was a battleground in many households with children aged two to five.
More than 80 per cent of the 418 parents quizzed online struggled to get their youngsters to brush, with almost a third reporting it was a daily battle.
Experts fear the problems will exacerbate Australia’s child dental health shame.
Almost half of six-year-olds have cavities in their teeth, and 12-year-olds have worse dental health than Ugandan children, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
“It certainly continues to concern us, but it’s something that can be turned around,” Australian Dental Association chief Robert Boyd-Bollard said.
“We need to get parents to start early and often to train their children in daily oral hygiene habits that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
“If we can do that, a lot of future problems will be eliminated or reduced.”
Australasian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry president Dr James Lucas said two-thirds of parents surveyed, on behalf of Oral-B, feared long-term problems as a result of their children’s brushing trials.
He said that simple strategies, such as brushing to music, using novelty toothbrushes and avoiding teeth-cleaning when children were tired, could turn them into happy brushers.
He said children’s teeth needed to be brushed for about two minutes twice a day. And parents should do it for them until the age of six or seven.
Dr James said children should make their first dentist visit between the age of 12 and 15 months, and every six to nine months after that.
Seamus Hadfield, 15 months, loves brushing his teeth with plenty of help from his parents.
Dad Wayne said the Coburg toddler brushed his eight teeth each night before bed and sometimes after breakfast and lunch.
“We want to teach him the importance of caring for his teeth because his mum and I are both sweet-tooths and no doubt he will be as well.”
Periodontal Disease: How to Protect Your Teeth and Gums
This is an article that was recently published in MarketWatch – USA.
Millions of people have periodontal (gum) disease and many don’t even know they have it. Are you one of them?
Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. It is caused by the plaque-forming bacteria in your mouth. While brushing and flossing removes most plaque, it is impossible to remove all of it. The remaining plaque hardens into tartar. When this tartar forms under the gumline, it can irritate and infect the gums, leading to gum disease.
The good news is that periodontal disease is easily preventable. The Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) reminds the public about the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Periodontal disease has two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. The first stage, gingivitis, is the early stage of periodontal disease, where the bacteria get in between the tooth and gum, causing inflammation. During this early stage, daily brushing and flossing can likely reverse periodontal disease.
If left untreated, periodontitis, the more advanced stage of periodontal disease, can develop, causing irreversible damage to the gums, teeth and surrounding bones. Periodontitis is more serious because the tissue that holds the teeth to the bone is destroyed, causing tooth roots to be exposed and increasing decay, inflammation and receding gums, resulting in possible tooth loss.
There are several factors that can increase your risk of developing periodontal disease, including the use of tobacco; certain systematic diseases, such as diabetes; some types of medication, including steroids and various anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives; bridges that no longer fit properly; crooked teeth; fillings that have become defective and pregnancy.
“Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease,” said Dr. David Shemo, a PDA member and general dentist from Wilkes-Barre. “Their theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when it enters the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the heart’s blood vessels and contributing to clot formation.”
PDA offers the following tips to maintain optimal dental health and prevent periodontal disease:
- Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Brushing and flossing
helps to remove the plaque and food particles from the surface of the
teeth and between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Replace
your toothbrush every few months or when the bristles become frayed or
worn. Using a fluoride toothpaste and antibacterial mouthrinse is
another way to help keep tooth decay at bay. - Eat a nutritious and well-balanced diet. Choose a variety of nutritious
foods from the five main food groups: grain, dairy, fruits, vegetables
and meat/poultry. - Visit the dentist at least every six months for oral health checkups and
professional cleaning. - Contact your dentist immediately if you notice any symptoms of
periodontal disease, as early detection is key. Symptoms of periodontal
disease include red, swollen or tender gums or gums that bleed easily or
are pulling away from the teeth; chronic bad breath or bad taste in the
mouth; permanent teeth that are loose or separating; pus appearing
between the teeth and gums when gums are pressed; changes in teeth
alignment when you bite and changes in the fit of partial dentures.
Recession taking a bite out of dentists’ pockets
This is an article that was recently published in 3 News NZ - Auckland,New Zealand.
Economists have their finger on the pulse when it comes to a recession, but if you want to know how it affects people in their everyday lives, ask a dentist. Industry heads say they know when times are tough because their appointment books go quiet.
That’s one more reason why smiles are not so bright during a recession.
The Dentists’ Association says practices have lost up to 15 percent of patients in the last six months because people are reluctant to fork out for regular check-ups.
“A lot of people have got different priorities that don’t involve dentistry, and you’re right, they will leave dentistry until the last possible moment when they can’t avoid it,” says association president Mark Goodhew, “and that’s usually when something’s broken or something is really painful.”
The average cost of a check-up ranges from $60 to a $130.
Dentist Rob Shearman says people are not taking care of the small jobs, and that could lead to big problems in the long run.
“That is the cornerstone of dental health so if those things stop then yes, I think there is concern for the dental health of New Zealand.”
A dentist’s bill has become more feared than their tools. An oral health survey revealed 55 percent of people say they do not visit the dentist regularly because of the cost.
Just eight percent said fear was their reason for keeping clear.
Expect to get a reminder if you are due for a check-up. Dentists say they will be chasing up lost patients, and not taking their advice may come back to bite you.

Kids teeth in Australia in decay mode
This article by William Atkins was recently published in iTWire – Australia.
An Australian research study shows that 97% of pre-school children in Australia are not brushing their teeth and gums correctly. In fact, one Australian health expert calls bad teeth: “leprosy of the mouth.’’ Oh, yuck!
Galaxy Research, an Australian market research company that provides various polling and research studies for state and federal governments and private companies, performed the research.
The study was paid for by Oral-B (makers of toothbrushes and other hygiene products), and supported by the Australian Dental Association and many dentists from New South Wales.
The Daily Telegraph reports “Dentists now warn a generation of kids will grow up facing rotting teeth, extractions and gum disease.†[Daily Telegraph: “Dental crisis is about to bite usâ€]
The research showed these dramatic findings:
• 85% of parents have trouble getting their children to brush their teeth and gums
• Over 50% of pre-school have never visited a dentist
• Average tooth-brushing for pre-school children was one minute
• Only 9% of children brushed two minutes or more, the recommended minimum amount of time
• Over 66% of parents are worried about the dental health of their children
• Only 7% of parents brush their children’s teeth
• Nearly 50% of six-year-old children already have cavities in their baby teeth
• 42% of 12-year-old children have cavities in their permanent teeth
According to the Daily Telegraph article, associate professor Hans Zoellner, chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Oral Health, said “Children don’t have the manual dexterity to brush their own teeth – they really need their parents’ help.â€
Even worse is the statement by Dr. James Lucas, of the Australasian Academy of Paediatric, as reported by the Daily Telegraph: “… dental decay in children was worsening and could lead to problems like abscesses, extractions and infections.â€
The article concludes with this scary comment, “Another dental expert described tooth decay as being like ‘leprosy of the mouth’.â€
The ABC Health and Wellbeing article “Dental health in decay†states, “What’s the most common health condition in Australia? Heart disease? Cancer? Few people realise it’s actually tooth decay, with advanced periodontal (gum) disease the fifth most common, and rates of edentulism (loss of teeth) also high, according to the Public Health Association of Australia.â€
It continues, “As a nation, we’re facing a crisis in oral health, with half a million people unable to access a dentist for even basic care. These people can’t afford to visit a private dentist as the bulk of Australians do. So they must compete for the very limited public services on offer.”
“By the time an appointment comes around, some have waited up to five years for the privilege. By then, decay is often so entrenched, removal of affected teeth is the only option.â€

Painful wait for Hunter dental patients
This is an article by Tess Campbell that was recently published in the Newcastle Herald – Newcastle, Australia.
THOUSANDS of Hunter patients have to wait for public dental treatment, some suffering for up to two months before assessments are made.
A NSW Government report issued in January named the region as the fifth worst for dental waiting times and little had improved since, Hunter dentists said last week.
Hunter New England Health receives about 4500 calls for patients requiring care each month and 10 per cent of those were urgent cases, such as dental infections.
Severe cases were given an appointment for assessment usually within 24 hours but almost 3000 patients with less urgent ailments such as toothache could wait between five and 30 days for an appointment, Hunter New England Health oral health director Lanny Chor said.
About 1500 patients with non-urgent needs would join a waiting list for assessment each month.
A lack of commitment from the State Government was to blame, Hunter dentist Chris Wilson said.
Dr Wilson, the former Australian Dental Association of NSW president, said demand in the Hunter for public dental treatment far outweighed the supply of dentists.
Government planning was not adequate, he said.
The NSW Government spent less per capita on public dentistry than its counterparts.
Hunter New England Health oral health priority system provides a single access point for the North Coast and the Hunter for people with a health-care card, pensioners, preschool age children and full-time students.
“Our waiting periods have remained relatively stable since 2007,” Dr Chor said.
In the past financial year, the service’s 14 dentist and four dental prosthetics and 13 dental therapists provided care for 119,031 patients.
In January, 8477 Hunter people were waiting for treatment and 10,833 were awaiting assessment.
“We understand the wait can be difficult for patients waiting for care and [Hunter New England Health] oral health staff do their best to provide care to people as quickly as possible,” Dr Chor said.
Dr Wilson said the Hunter was better off than places that were further away from Sydney.
However, graduates had to be encouraged to seek work outside of Sydney to tackle a severe rural skills shortage, he said.
